Tilt and slide windows are extremely simple to operate since all functionality is through the single handle. Turning it 90 degrees allows the window panel to slide to the side across a fixed windowpane, providing a large open area to let in air. A 180-degree turn causes the window to tilt outwards on a bottom hinge, allowing a degree of ventilation even in conditions of rain.
These windows are different from tilt and turn windows, which will also tilt on bottom hinges but, rather than sliding across, they open fully on side hinges. They are similar to a conventional casement window but open into the room rather than outwards. The tilt function of both is enough to provide ventilation but insufficient to allow entry, thereby retaining the security of a closed window. It is also a space-saving feature since, when tilted open, the window hardly intrudes into the room, especially since the opening is mainly at the top.
