7 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Windows

When it comes to the aesthetic facade of your home, the humble window does a lot of heavy lifting. They are a wonderful feature of the home, letting in natural light and allowing you to look out at the world around you.

While windows last a long time, they still wear out eventually. This can cause all sorts of practical issues and can lower the attractiveness of your home.

With this in mind, you might be asking the question ‘How do I know when it’s time to replace my windows?’. In this blog, we will cover the key indicators that it is time to consider new windows for your property.

1. Signs of Draughts and Air Leaks

A good window allows you to see out of it while keeping the outside out. However, some worn out windows let in a draft. This is particularly problematic when it comes to the colder months. Draughty windows may let in a chill breeze, reducing the effectiveness of your central heating. Windows with an air leak can also let warm air in, making the room warmer and creating more work for your air conditioner.

Windows may not be airtight for a number of reasons. In extreme cases the windowpane might be broken. However, leaks can also be caused by missing or perished weatherproofing on the window. Additionally, the sealant around the window may be damaged. Likewise, if your window is old you may not be able to shut your window properly or fully.

Windows that let in air will also not be weatherproof. This means that moisture will be able to make its way indoors. This may cost you money in the long term as it will encourage mould growth near the window and around your home.

The worst thing about leaky windows is that there are few quick fixes. If your leak is caused by deteriorating caulk or sealant, applying a new layer of sealant may reduce the problem temporarily

However, the only surefire way to resolve the issue is to get new windows installed.

2. Visible Damage to Frames or Glass

Over time, your windows may become damaged. This can result from accidents, such as a stray football or debris carried by strong winds or simply wear and tear. In addition to looking unsightly, broken frames and windowpanes can let in a draught, meaning they aren’t weatherproof.

If you have a cracked window, you may be tempted to fix it using glass glue. However, this is only a temporary fix so investing in a new window is the most cost-effective option.

3. Difficulty Opening or Closing Windows

Older windows may have issues with opening or closing. This might be due to a number of different issues such as problems with hinges, tracks, weatherstripping or even the frame itself.

There are some quick fixes you might wish to try. For example, you might try lubricating the hinges, checking the weatherstripping or checking for signs of frame warping. If all these fixes fail to resolve the problem, that is a signal that it’s time for new windows.

4. Condensation Between Glass Panes

Condensation inside your window occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with the cold surface of the glass. When encountered between your double glazing, this is a big sign that your windows are not weatherproof. As a result, air from the outside can infiltrate the space.

Unfortunately, these compromised windows are less energy efficient and may encourage the development of damp and mould.

If you are experiencing this, the only solution is to invest in some new windows.

5. Faded Furniture and Flooring

Faded furniture and flooring are a problem that may seem unrelated to your windows. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The faded look of furniture is actually down to UV light exposure. UV rays break down the chemical bonds in fabric and wood.

One way to protect your furniture is to use blinds or curtains during the day. You might also consider moving your furniture out of direct sunlight.

However, the best way to fix this is to install windows with built-in UV ray protection. These windows use a film that blocks UV light while letting the sunshine in.

6. Increased Energy Bills

A big sign that it is time to replace your windows is an increased energy bill. Older or poorly maintained windows may not be weatherproof. This is often down to the seal between the frame and the wall, but it can also be the result of windows that do not fully shut or are damaged.

Poorly sealed windows are not effective insulators. They let cold breezes and warm air in. This can make your air conditioner or heating work harder, which shows up on your energy bill.

7. Outdated Style and Poor Functionality

Rather than having an issue with the functionality of your windows, it is perfectly acceptable to replace them for aesthetic reasons. Perhaps you are renovating the outside of your house, and the current style of window does not match your exterior design plans? Or maybe you’d like windows that function differently, such as being able to be opened?

Replacing your windows can allow you to change the look of your home inside and out. By starting from scratch, you can dictate the style and functionality.

If you do decide to replace your windows, why not upgrade them? By choosing to get double or even triple glazing, you can effectively weatherproof your home and reduce the amount of outside noise pollution coming in. Should you decide to sell your property, new windows will add value to the house, making the investment worthwhile.
